Anub’Rekhan Naxxramas 25 Man Raid Guide

April 16th, 2009 · Arachnid Quarter, Boss Guide, Guide, Naxx, Tactics, WotLK, WoW

Anub’Rekhan is probably one of the easiest WotLK bosses in Naxxramas, he is a good gear check for the first bosses you will encounter in this instance, and provides a good morale building fight for your guild.

But lets get down to the Basics, Anub’Reklhan stands at about 6,800,000 hp in 25 man raid mode. He has some mean abilities that could cause you some minor problems, but nothing that should wipe a sufficiently organised guild run! Just as a forewarning two cryptguards will be present at the start of the encounter!

Anub’Rekhan has several abilities, and as mentioned earlier they can be devious, but are easily manageable. These Abilities are,

  • Impale – Anub’Rekhan’s impale ability is the easiest to avoid but by far the most deadly if not managed properly. This AoE Effect targets a random raid player and hits everyoen between Anub and the targetted raid member. This causes 5600 to 7300 physical damage and launches the players into the air, giving them a 50% health hit unless they use a slow fall ability.
  • Locust Swarm – Locust Swarm is a fairly strange ability, it completley silences all players within its radius removing all abilities, not jsut spells! This is on a 60 second cooldown but usually occures every 70 – 120 seconds. The Locust Swarm is an AoE ability that causes a DoT 1300 to 1800 nature damage every two seconds. This doesn’t seem much until you realise this DoT Debuff stacks every two seconds and can easily cause unmanageable DoT damage to a player. Fortunately during this time Anub’s speed is reduced by 75%. Ontop of this Another Cryp Guard spawns at Anub’Rekhan’s initial spwn point.
  • Summon Corpse Scarabs – Anub’Rekhan can summon Corpse Scarabs at any time with no cooldown. This can be annoying, but not unmanagable. 10 Scarabs spawn from dead Crypt Guards and 5 spawn from dead players, and will instantly start attacking random players, frost nova FTW here!

The Crypt Guards that appear with Anub’Rekhan will spawn throughout the fight and have several abilities of their own. They have 521,000 hp so cannot be taken down too easily, but should not cause too much trouble if dealt with by a good raid group!

  • Cleave – Cleave gives 110% damage to up to three players in your raid.
  • Acid Spit – A Stacking DoT that causes 500 nature dmaage every 2 seconds for 10 seconds, this Debuff stacks.
  • Frenzy – The Crypt Guards launch an immobilizing web at low hp, when they hit frenzy their damage will also increase by 50% and haste by 60%.

Anub’Rekhan 25 man strategy

Although thsi can be complete with two tanks you really do need three tanks to handle both the crypt gurads, scarabs and Anub.

Anub’Rekhan should be tanked on his initial spawn point, the Crypt Guards should be picked up by the off tanks and moved close to Anub’Rekhan then nuked down by the DPS, due to their infinate stacking DOT it is imperative they are taken down quickly.

The DPS need to spread out around Anub to avoid impale, but the mages should be close to the dead Crypt Guard corpses to frost nova the scarabs which spawn, these too should be killed as a matter of urgency.

When Locust swarm occurs all players must run away from Anub’Rekhan, the healers should stay out of range (30 Yards) but close to the tank to keep him healed where required. The tank himself should kite Anub’Rekhan around the slime edge up until the other side of the room at which point teh phase should be over. It is significantly easier if you have a hunter with aspect of the pack on during this stage!

Rinse and repeat this, taking anub back to the centre each time, and before you know it you will have killed this boss!

Anub’Rekhan – 10 man Naxx Arachnid Quarter

December 5th, 2008 · Arachnid Quarter, Boss Guide, Guide, Introduction, Map, Naxx, Tactics, WotLK, WoW

Anub’Rekhan is one of the first bosses you will meet in the new Naxxramas, and many raids have commented on the fact that a significant space in the name Anub may explain why Anub’Rekhan is so easy to take down.

In the 10 man version of the Naxx raid Anub’Rekhan has a rather paltry 2,230,000 health and deals damage mostly in the form of easily avoidable AoE Attacks. These AoE attacks dealt out by Anub are,

Impale – Targets a random player and deals damage to all people between Anub’Rekhan and the target. This deals 4813 to 56187 physical damage + 50% fall damage, for this reason it is heavily advised that healers keep an eye out for affected players and launch a heal on them while they are mid air to try and prevent death. Wipes from this move can be avoided by ranged standing infront of Anub in a semi-circle and melee standing behind Anub also in a semi-circle

Locust Swarm – This occurs after 60 seconds but is not on a set timer, Anub will cast this randomly after the 1 minute cooldown. This Aoe atack causes a stacking DoT debuff to stack on players within 30 yards of Anub’Rekhan. All players with the dot will also be silenced and prevented from using any attacks, physical or otherwise! The DoT deals 875 to 1125 per stack on the player every two seconds so can easily cause deaths in an ill-equipped raid.

Anub’Rekhan also summons Crypt Guards and Corpse Scarabs.

The Crypt Guards have around 300k health and have several abilities.

  • Cleave
  • Frenzy
  • Acid Spit – DoT that ticks for 500 (Stacks)
  • Immobilizing Web – AoE Immobilization effect, can be deadly if mixed with Locust Swarm!

Corpse Scarabs – Cast by Anub Rekhan on a random corpse, raid member corpses spawn 5 scarabs and Crypt Guard Corpses spawn 10 Corpse Scarabs.

Anub’Rekhan Strategy

Anub’Rekhan is best attempted with two to three tanks for this boss, a mage or other AoEer is also handy to pick up scarabs, these should taken off the mage as soon as posisble by an off tank, paladins are best suited to this.

For the tank to survive Locust Swarm the best tactic seems to be to kite Anub, who moves at 75% reduced speed during this time. Warriors are especially good for this as a warrior can intervene to the hunter and use aspect of the pack to help kite Anub.

There is a tactic involving 3-4 healers keeping the tank up through Locust Swarm and keeping Anub in one position, i would not personally advise this tactic though.

It is important that you do not tank Anub too close to the walls as he does on occasion evade if Impale is cast towards the tank.

Apart from avoiding his AoE moves however the rest is fairly simple Tank and Spank!

Wrath of the Lich King Naxxramas Guide

December 1st, 2008 · Naxx, WotLK

Naxxramas, once one of the hardest raids in WoW has returned yet again in Wrath of the Lich King as one the entry level raiding instance, with both 10 and 25 man raiding options.

Naxxramas (more commonly known as Naxx) is made up of several sections, each composed of a different theme, unfortunately all of which are severely depressing when compared to some of the rather vibrant instances that appeared in the Burning Crusade.

As I progress through these sections, bosses and trash mobs I will be updating each of the sections on this list with upto date information on how to down the bosses of Naxx in WotlK. The most interesting part of the new Naxx in WotLK is that Naxxramas can be completed in two versions, with either 10 or 25 man raid groups. This is a great advancement for raiding guilds in Wrath of the Lich King as it allows both small and large guilds to run the raid and get comparatively equal loot for the number of players!

The different areas available in the new Naxx are

  • Abomination Wing
  • Plague Wing
  • Deathknight Wing
  • Spider Wing
  • Frostwyrm Lair

I will shortly be updating these lists with both 10 and 25 man guides to the bosses in each particular area!

The Maiden of Virtue – Karazhan Boss

July 4th, 2008 · Boss Guide, Kara, Tactics, WoW

The Maiden of Virtue is the Second Boss in Kara. She is one of the easier bosses to take down in Karazhan, but do not underestimate her, she causes a lot of AoE damage!

The Maiden of Virtue (Maiden) has around 420,000 health, so can be, infact, MUST be nuked down quickly. With correct postitioning the Maiden boss can be defeated very easily, if everyone is put into the right places this boss is a simple tank and spank, but anyone who can dispell must keep an eye out for Maidens Holy Fire, which can cause some pretty nasty damage if not removed instantly.

But lets get down to basics, what will the Maiden do to you?

  • Melee: on 14k armor: is around 2500–3500 every 1.8 sec, 4000-4800 crushing. This is not too bad and can usually be covered sufficiently by one healer. Other healers should however keep up all their Heal over Time (HoT) spells to help mitigate crushing blows and keep the tank alive during repentance
  • Immune to Taunt: Watch your Agro DPS!
  • Holy Ground: permanent 240–360 holy damage every 3 sec AoE 12 yards around her that also silences spell casters for 1 second.
  • Holy Fire: 1 second cast, 3238–3762 fire damage up front and 1750 fire damage every 2 seconds for 12 seconds. The DoT is a Magic effect and MUST be dispelled.
  • Holy Wrath: AoE chained holy damage that is cast instantly with a 20 second cooldown, it targets a random player but does not target or chain onto /off of pets.
  • Repentance: Deals 1750–2250 holy damage and incapacitates the whole raid for 12 seconds with a thirty second cooldown. Dispellable only by Divine Shield and Ice Block, but broken by any damage taken. Does not hit the Maiden’s target. Repentance has a 0.5 second Cast Time.

What to Watch Out For – Why Maiden Wipes Your Raid

Maiden will wipe your raid for a few very simple reasons.

The most common reason for a wipe is repentance, this keeps your healers out of action for 12 seconds, there are several ways to avoid this. The easiest is simply to keep up all your HoTs on the main tank from the entire raid, any draenei in your raid who should take turns in casting their HoT.

If you have a DPS/Offtank druid in the group he will be stunned by repentance but the stun will be removed from Holy Ground, When this occurs they should move out of holy ground and start spamming hteir heals onto the tank – if he has low health throw a big heal on, high health throw a HoT then a big heal.

The second reason tends to revolve around Holy Fire. This spell causes a lot of single target damage and must be dispelled as soon as it occurs, as soon as he is healed top his health up and carry on. If you do not dispell or heal over this the affected player will usually die within 6 seconds.

This is possibly one of the shortest guides I have ever wrote, simply because the Maiden fight is so astoundingly simple, with only one phase and few actualy abilities Maiden is possibly one of the easiest bosses in Karazhan!

Positioning

Positioning is very important when defeating Maiden. This boss has a fairly hard to see constant AoE effect. It doesn’t cause much damage but th e silence can be very annoying for ranged raid group members. This can be avoided by tanking Maiden in the direct centre of the raised platform, her AoE ends just before the top of the platform.

Your Melee and tank should if possible all be on one group, this will allow for easy Circle of Healing management against the Bosses AoE effect, and save a lot of mana caused by over healing on this section.

Melee themselves should try and spraed out a little around the boss to avoid Holy Wrath, the ranged should spread out in a circle around the stairs of the platform. This can significantly reduce Holy Wrath damage, the healers however should keep in range of everyone to peform dispells, this is best doen with the 2 or 3 healers keeping as far away from each other as possibel, failure to do this can leave blind spots where a person effected with holy fire may die before coming into range of a healer.

Healers Advice

The best advice that can be given here is all healers keep up the HoTs on the tank, Keep the tank at full health and include a Circle of Healing Priest in the party.

Dispelling is priority, a single healer should be given the job of keeping the tanks health full HP.

DPS Advice

DPS Must keep agro under control, failure to do so usually means your healers are taken out of action by holy ground.

Other Advice

If your healers are all taken out by Repentance move maiden towards one of them, the holy ground will bring the healer out of repentance. Remember to move Maiden back to the center though!

DPSrs with healing ability shoudl do so during repentance

Paladins healer can use blessing of sacrifice on a melee palyer after teh repentance cool down to constantly take damage.

Palidins can use Divine Shield to remove repentance.

Shamans can use Grounding Totems to absorb Holy Fire

Holy Fire CAN be spell reflected!

Priests can avoid Repentance by casting Shadow Word: Death on Maiden during the 0.5 second casting time, this will bounce back after the stun and bring you back into action.

Mages should use dampen magic on all players except the tank, this will drastically reduce damage taken by players.

Attumen The Huntsman and Midnight, the Bad-Ass Horse of Karazhan!

May 20th, 2008 · Boss Guide, Kara, Tactics, WoW

Attument the Huntsman and Midnight is the first boss in Karazhan and the easiest by a long way. Considering the huge number of gimmick fights in the burning crusade with lack of taunt and some ingenious but rather annoying abilities this is a refreshingly simple tank and spank battle. However there are a few tips for defeating attumen and midnight that you should know starting this battle.

First things first though, lets get the basics sorted.

Attumen has around 350,000 health and is an Undead bloke, like the majority of bosses in Karazhan. He has a variety of attacks, most of which can be easily avoided if your tanks and players stand in the right place. While Attumen can be solo tanked it is not recommended and you will require a minimum of two tanks for the other bosses anyway.

His attacks are as follows,

  • Melee – 1.6k – 2.1k on tank, 8k on clothies. Attumen can and should be disarmed.
  • Shadow Cleave - Cleaves anyone in front of him for around 4k.
  • AoE Curse – Reduces chance to hit with melee and ranged attacks and spells by 50%. Casts every 30 seconds. Can be removed by mages and druids.
  • Mount Up – When he or Midnight reaches 25% health he will mount and they will form 1 boss at full health.
  • Charge – This charge does over 6k damage on cloth and does a knockdown however it has a minimum range so can easily be avoided by having everyone hug. Remember to stay on his back half to avoid the Cleave. This is only active when Attumen Mounts Midnight.

The Basic Setup

The raid setup for attumen is fantastically simple.

First, Your offtank needs to get agro on Midnight, I suggest giving at least 5 seconds for this as neither Attumen of Midnight can be taunted (Damn Kara has a lot of this). It helps if you take midnight to the wall, keeping him well out of the way.

Once your tank has sufficient agro DPS Midnight to 95%. At this point Attumen will appear, it is vital that at this point your main tank gets agro on Attumen and faces him away from the group.

The rest of the group including the off tank must stay behind attumen to avoid his cleave ability,

Important things to remember about the Attumen fight are Demoralising Shout and Thunderclap, Disarm can and should also be used on Attument to significantly reduce his melee damage. And Spell reflect will help the fight by putting the 50% miss chance onto Attumen himself.

So you have your Raid in place with the two bosses where you want them. The next part is simple, DPS Midnight down as fast as you can. As soon as he hits 25% hp Attumen will mount him, restoring to 100% health. We do this because Midnights health goes down significantly faster than Attumen’s

As soon Attumen mounts Midnight your Main Tank must ensure the Attumen/Midnight combo is attacking him and move him to face away from the group again. All other raid members must huddle up directly behind the boss to avoid his cleave and charge ability (Which is lethal to clothies, especially if only one stays outside the group.)

The DPS should leave a couple of seconds after the bosses join to allow the tank to get enough agro, this is rarely required, but 2-3 seconds is a safeguard to a possibly stupid wipe.

The rest of the fight becomes a very easy tank and spank battle, healing is fairly easy and should only be needed on the tank itself, it should only be a matter of time till Attumen goes down!

It may also be useful to note that there is a repair guy near this boss, however you need a certain level of rep with the violet eye to use him. He also sells several rare recipes (Bind on Pickup) for any flourishing Jewelcrafters or Blacksmiths out there.
